GARC Upgrades Automotive Testing Infrastructure Under PM E-DRIVE Scheme

The enhancement of testing capabilities at the Global Automotive Research Centre (GARC) marks a crucial stride in India's transition toward clean mobility and advanced vehicular manufacturing. Operating under the aegis of the National Automotive Board (NAB) within the Ministry of Heavy Industries, GARC acts as a nodal entity for homologation, safety certification, and research. By integrating state-of-the-art testing equipment funded via the PM E-DRIVE scheme, India is systematically addressing historical gaps in domestic testing infrastructure, thereby reducing the reliance on foreign laboratories for advanced vehicle validation. From an operational standpoint, the infusion of ₹221.13 crore to GARC is part of a larger ₹780 crore allocation designated for testing agency upgrades under the umbrella PM E-DRIVE scheme (total outlay ₹10,900 crore active until March 2028). The technical upgrades span across diverse domains, including AIS-156 compliant battery safety testing, electromagnetic compatibility (EMI/EMC) under AIS-004 Part 3, heavy commercial vehicle evaluation, and sophisticated passive safety labs equipped with dummies and high-speed UHD-4K crash cameras (up to 3,000 fps). These high-resolution tools capture intricate mechanical deformations, occupant kinematics, and airbag deployment dynamics during destructive crash tests, ensuring compliance with stringent international safety standards. Strategically, this development directly bolsters the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiative in the automotive sector. As global automotive paradigms shift toward electric mobility, connected vehicles, and autonomous driving features like ADAS, indigenous testing and certification ecosystems become indispensable.
